The passing of James A. Downey III

It is with deep sympathy and warm condolences that we announce the passing of James A. Downey III on Saturday Sept. 17th, 2022. He is survived by his wife Karen and son James.

As a proud U.S. Marine and Orioles fan, a former Public Defender and College Lecturer, Jim spent most of his life as one of the leading litigators in Bucks County working at Begley, Carlin & Mandio. In a law career that spanned over 40 years he tried, settled, and resolved hundreds of cases involving commercial disputes, personal injury, civil rights, and criminal law at the state and federal level. A significant part of his practice was devoted to sitting as an arbitrator and mediator for alternate dispute resolution of complicated civil cases.

A local legend through and through, Jim graduated from Temple Law School and Saint Joseph’s University, was a member of the Bucks County, PA and American Bar Associations, American Trial Lawyers Association, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Brehon Law Society, and Marine Corps League, as well as being on the Board of Directors for the Newtown Crossing Community Association, Legal Aid of Southeastern PA, and Lower Bucks Family YMCA. Some of his accolades included being selected as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer, Top Rated Layer in Pennsylvania, and being amongst the highest AV Rated.

Jim Downey began his tenure with Begley, Carlin & Mandio in 1978 and became a Partner in 1981. He represented clients like the Lower Bucks County Joint Municipal Authority, Morrisville Municipal Authority and Tullytown Borough Civil Service Commission among many others. We here at BCM are truly proud to have known this wonderful person as both a friend and a colleague. Jim always brought with him honesty, integrity, and professionalism. His legacy will last for years to come within these walls and in the many lives that Jim touched and enriched.
