Yardley began to develop into a village around 1807. The name Yardley can first be seen by their post office using the name Yardleyville. The village later became known as Yardley at the time the reading railroad came through the area in 1876. Yardley became a station for the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War. Some known hiding places still exist in Worthington Insurance (once a general store) and the Continental Tavern (once the Continental Hotel).
